What’s all the fuss with Greek salad?
The rumor started to spread around, that Greek salad is very healthy (other than super-duper tasty). In view of containing olives, olive oil, and tomatoes. All of which have huge health benefits, that are well known.
All ingredients in this salad are raw. Therefore in their most nutritional form (plus not much cooking for you). After a while, more and more people started eating it. And they realized that it’s actually really tasty (healthy isn’t always so). And that’s how Greek salad became world known.
But I have a more realistic side of the story than this…(cause this really sounded like a story)
So what I do believe is that Greek Salad owes its popularity, to people that were lucky enough to try it first hand. Here in Greece. They were lucky because Greek salad is all about summer. It’s the taste of summer. Refreshing, mouthwatering tomatoes and cucumbers. Creamy feta cheese, appetizing olives. Warm sun, sea breeze. Get the idea?

Now I understand that you can’t just grab a plane flight and come to have a Greek salad at this place. What you can do though is follow this recipe and make a big bowl of a Classic Greek Salad exactly the same way as in Greece.
Greek Salad’s little secret…
Since I’m from Greece I’ve eaten Greek salad like forever. Without paying any attention to it. While doing my school practice at a catering, I realized that I didn’t know exactly how to make a really good Greek salad.
I have finally figured out it’s secret (every dish has one). And it was really the simplest thing. Without having to add anything else. MIX IT WELL. In Greece when we make a Greek salad we usually throw everything in the plate. Drizzle with olive oil, oregano and that’s pretty much it.
If you mix it through and let it stand for a few minutes, you won’t believe the difference it makes. I was amazed. (and also felt a bit dummy for not figuring this out earlier). There are a few ways to do that. You can mix the feta in as well, or you can even try it with Cretan Dakos (Greek rusks). Or you can even fill an Artisan Bread Loaf with it, to me that’s the absolutely Best Greek Salad Recipe.
Eat it like a Greek.
If you finally decide to make a Greek salad, then you must learn how to eat it too. I’m not talking about utensils here. Of course, you will use a fork. We’re not China using eating sticks or anything (Thank God, as I’m completely helpless with them) What Greeks absolutely adore, is dipping pieces of bread in olive oil. They like to do that in any dish that’s made with olive oil. But the best dish to do that is Greek salad.
Why do they love to do that? All the flavors have blended together. With the sweet juices from the tomatoes and the olive oil, creating the most outstanding salad dressing you have ever tried. Or are about to try…
